The rest of the posts!
Today's Topic: #FlashbackFriday – Your First Reviews - Link up to your some of your first reviews. Feel free to get reflective.

So my first reviews were kind of all over the place and not very professional (because my reviews now are so professional right?).  I definitely had and have a lot to learn!  Here are links to my first five reviews I posted on this blog - beware, they're terrible!

The Elite by Kiera Cass

The Dark Side of Truth by Gary Caruso

Sloppy Firsts by Megan McCafferty

The Eyes of the Dragon by Stephen King

Shiver by Maggie Siefvater

Preeeetty icky right?  Well, that was just five short months ago!  It says that some were posted in 2013 and in different months but that's because I thought it would be a good idea to schedule them for the day I originally read them.  So it's a bit of a mess but I haven't had the time to do anything about it yet.  I'm getting there!

What were your first reviews like?

#BookBlogWriMo - Favorite Subgenres

The rest of the posts!
Today's Topic: Favorite Subgenres - Self-explanatory.

Uhmmmm... yeah... You see, I basically don't have any favorites when it comes to genres... Well wait no, that would be a lie because I do love fantasy things!

So I guess I'll go into that...?

Fantasy is a lovely genre because it has all those mythical creatures in it!  Like dragons, faeries, warlocks, demons, angels, wizards, witches, and assassins!  I love all those things!

One of the best fantasy book series' is Harry Potter!

Dragons are also so amazing!  I loved the Eragon series and the.... blehhhh was it called the Firelight series??  By Sophie Jordan?  My memory is not so good today guys.

And of course the queen of assassins, Celaena Sardothien!  I also love Katsa from the Graceling series :D

Oh and I love science fiction!  Specifically dystopia's (that counts as a subgenre right??).  I just think it's so cool how each author's interpretation of the future differs and whether or not any of them will come true.  Because it is in the future right?  You can't know for sure if The Darkest Minds will become a reality!

It could happen!

Haha so here's the thing.  I just looked up the definition of a subgenre and found out I was basically doing this all wrong.  Well sort of.  But these are my own personal subgenres!  When I looked up examples, they were so broad like contemporary.  I mean, I'd have so much to say about that topic but there are parts of contemporary fantasy that I don't like!  So I broke it down into my favorite subsubgenres.  That's my style man!

What are your favorite subgenres or subsubgenres?

R&R Review Tuesday: In Chains by Michelle Abbott

Goodreads Blurb:
"A romance set in a world where slavery is government run and slaves are fitted with microchips.

Savannah, fleeing a turbulent relationship, seeks solace at her brother’s country farmhouse. It’s there that she meets Kayden; her brother’s slave who's considered less than human. These two damaged souls form an unbreakable bond, one that’s about to be tested, because Kayden is her brother’s property and he will stop at nothing to keep them apart.

Please note this book contains some sexual scenes, violence and strong language."

Review:
Thank you to the author, Michelle Abbott, for gifting me with a copy of In Chains in exchange for an honest review.

This is one of those books that I'm just not sure what to rate it.  I decided to go with 4 stars because it was a good solid book with a good plot, decent world-building, and very fast, addictive pace.  Just let it be known, this kind of book isn't for everyone.

I only had one complaint about this book but it's a rather large issue in my eyes which is why it's worth a whole star to me.  World-building.  This is, if not the most important, one of the most important factors in whether or not a book is excellent or just good.  While I was reading, I didn't really understand what world I was in.  Modern day world where things turned out a bit differently?  In the future where this may come to pass?  In a completely different world than our own?  I really have no idea which left me kind of disoriented throughout the book.  Perhaps it will be remedied in the next book.

Other than that minor (well kind of major) glitch, everything was spot on.

Overall, this was such a compelling book.  I settled down on the couch one Saturday to read some R&R's and I couldn't put this one down!  Not even to eat lunch or go get some water or something.  I needed to know how it ended it was that suspenseful.  To that effect, it was a very intense love story that at first bordered on insta-love but as you get further in, it's anything but.

The author did a very good job of separating the two voices of Savannah and Kayden.  I've seen slightly better although this author had it harder, having to portray the truth about Kayden and whether or not the 'Neanderthal' gene truly affects him or not as the government says.

The Final Verdict:
All in all, a well done book although the world-building leaves something to be desired.  It was very addictive, suspenseful, intense, and intriguing!
4 stars

Mashup Review Friday and Blog Tour: Bloodmark and Bloodrealms by Aurora Whittet

Bloodmark Goodreads Blurb:
"Sixteen-year-old werewolf princess Ashling Boru is different from other wolves—she was able to shift to wolf form at birth. Rather than bringing pride to her family, it brings fear, and as a result, she is forced to live in seclusion in Ireland’s countryside. Ashling’s reputation is further blackened when she refuses her betrothed and defies the ancient laws. When her pack’s oldest rivals begin hunting her, she finds herself in the small town of York Harbor, Maine—far from everything she’s ever known.

In Maine, she crosses paths with the dark and rebellious Grey Donavan, and something ignites within her soul. There’s just one problem: Grey is human. Their instant connection turns into a passionate romance, and Ashling begins to believe she can create her own life outside of wolf laws. When she begins to uncover long-buried pack secrets—secrets that threaten to destroy all she holds dear—Ashling’s courage and tenacity are tested. Will she choose her deep and enduring love for Grey, or will she follow Old Mother’s path to her destiny?"

Bloodrealms Goodreads Blurb:
"Werewolf princess Ashling Boru's eighteenth birthday is only a year away, which means that she only has twelve months before she is claimed and fulfills her prophecy to unite the packs and lead her people. Her father decrees that her four suitors must fight in the Bloodrealms, the werewolves' ancient underground fighting world, and the winner will have King Boru's choice to win Ashling's hand. The wolf laws are rigid and barbaric, and Ashling's illicit love for Grey, if discovered, will mean his death. But when Ashling and Grey get trapped in the blood-soaked depths of the Bloodrealms, they find ancient horrors far greater than Ashling's father's rule.

With betrayal around every corner and old nemeses set to destroy Ashling, she is more divided than ever between the destiny she didn't choose and the love that she did. To make matters worse, her decision will not only set the course of her future, but the future of her entire race.

Bloodrealms is the second novel in Whittet’s Bloodmark saga."

Book Review Tuesday: Clara's War by Clara Kramer

Goodreads Blurb:
"On 21 July 1942 the Nazis invaded Poland. In the small town of Zolkiew, life for Jewish 15-year-old Clara Kramer was never to be the same again. While those around her were either slaughtered or transported, Clara and her family hid perilously in a hand-dug cellar. Living above and protecting them were the Becks.

Mr Beck was a womaniser, a drunkard and a self-professed anti-Semite, yet he risked his life throughout the war to keep his charges safe. Nevertheless, life with Mr Beck was far from predictable. From the house catching fire, to Beck's affair with Clara's cousin, to the nightly SS drinking sessions in the room just above, Clara's War transports you into the dark, cramped bunker, and sits you next to the families as they hold their breath time and again.

Sixty years later, Clara Kramer has created a memoir that is lyrical, dramatic and heartbreakingly compelling. Despite the worst of circumstances, this is a story full of hope and survival, courage and love."

Book Review Monday: Eona: The Last Dragoneye by Alison Goodman

Goodreads Blurb:
"Eon has been revealed as Eona, the first female Dragoneye in hundreds of years. Along with fellow rebels Ryko and Lady Dela, she is on the run from High Lord Sethon's army. The renegades are on a quest for the black folio, stolen by the drug-riddled Dillon; they must also find Kygo, the young Pearl Emperor, who needs Eona's power and the black folio if he is to wrest back his throne from the selfstyled "Emperor" Sethon. Through it all, Eona must come to terms with her new Dragoneye identity and power - and learn to bear the anguish of the ten dragons whose Dragoneyes were murdered. As they focus their power through her, she becomes a dangerous conduit for their plans. . . .

Eona, with its pulse-pounding drama and romance, its unforgettable fight scenes, and its surprises, is the conclusion to an epic story only Alison Goodman can create."

R&R Review Thursday: For the People: Post-Secession by R. Holland

Goodreads Blurb:
""They say the grass is greener on the other side. At least that's what people think. But we know better. We know that any grass is better than no grass at all. That it represents something that lived there and stayed long enough to die there. But we know better. Therefore we keep to our own kind...to our own side. It was them who crossed the fence. They say the grass is greener on the other side...But we know better...it was them who crossed the fence..." "There once was a government so divided. It was divided amongst classes, I believe. Because the government was so divided, the people became divided as well. No one agreed on what to do. There was gun-control, health care reform, and something called education reform. Or so I've been told." The world is divided between the high class and the low class. There is no in between. As the high class looks for the ultimate healthcare, they use the low class as their test subjects. They kidnap young Kiranda and her mother and kill her father. Big mistake! After Kiranda escapes the facility and returns to her world, she readies herself to go back for revenge. But first she has to find out her enemy's weaknesses. They were told they don't have any. While in the enemy territory, Kiranda finds an old friend she long thought was dead. Soon she will be forced to choose between the friend in their world and a friend in hers, all while trying to plan a way to bring the high class to their knees."
